Strivers' Row

Strivers’ Row celebrates doers - those among us who are pursuing their passions, putting their talents to use and in turn, establishing new standards. Each quarter a cohort is featured, making the masses aware of their work and motivations, and providing information for how to support their success. Strivers are young, Black creatives, professionals and entrepreneurs of diverse areas of expertise, experiences and perspectives.

Strivers' Row is a community. There is great promise for lasting professional partnerships and friendships to be cultivated among those who are invited to join. A number of private events are hosted for Strivers along with opportunities to represent the community at public events.

The stunning brownstones of Strivers’ Row are located on West 138th and West 139th Streets between Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard and Frederick Douglass Boulevard. Built between 1891 and 1893 with no amenity spared, the homes sat empty in the years following completion due to a refusal to sell to affluent Blacks. The decision was reversed in 1919. Black leaders, professionals and entertainers of the day soon moved in giving the district its nickname. The neighborhood received formal designation as St. Nicholas Historic District in 1967.

Weeks after graduating from Howard University, Destinee Swindell moved to Harlem in June 2013. For the next five years, she climbed the media agency ladder planning multi-million dollar budgets for brands like LVMH Beauty, Verizon, P&G, Coty (parent company of Marc Jacobs Fragrances, OPI, Philosophy and more) and Swarovski. She is currently the Media Supervisor at Cashmere Agency, AdAge’s 2019 Multicultural Agency of the Year, working on SheaMoisture and its sister brands. In January 2016, she co-launched an event series called The Link Up. It has grown from a small networking happy hour to day and night parties with hundreds in attendance. She also partners with others on events under the Chasing Destinee brand.

During her time in New York, Destinee has encountered many young people relentlessly chasing dreams. Whether they aspire to climb corporate ladders or build brands and businesses from the ground up, she is inspired by the passion, work ethic and sacrifice. Strivers’ Row is the manifestation of Destinee's belief that excellence should be recognized in an authentic way and her natural gift for connecting people.
